Frederick County Public Schools unnecessarily and repeatedly secluded and restrained students with disabilities, violating Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (Maryland, 2022).
A teacher at Whistler Elementary School physically and verbally abused students with special needs, including hitting them with rulers and using derogatory language (Illinois, 2023).
The lawsuit alleges students were improperly restrained in specialized chairs meant to improve posture for wheelchair users, and one parent claimed their child was choked (Michigan, 2023).
A former paraprofessional was convicted of abusing autistic students, including hitting and verbally assaulting them (Texas, 2024).
Students with autism at Jamison Elementary School were subjected to abuse, including improper restraints, and that the school district failed to act on reports of misconduct (Philadelphia, 2025).
Tasha Purnell pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree rape. The abuse occurred between 2010 and 2014 with a minor under the age of 16 while she was a teacher (Delaware, 2025).
Two former students sued the San Francisco Waldorf School, alleging that a tutor sexually abused them and that the school failed to act on signs of misconduct (California, 2025).
After attending Shrub Oak International School, Cian Roy, a young man with autism and intellectual disabilities, suffered a severe and permanent eye injury allegedly due to staff neglect and failure to follow his behavioral safety plan (New York, 2024).
6-year-old autistic student at Woodland School was subjected to repeated and inappropriate physical restraints using an unapproved technique called the "corner hold," causing significant emotional and physical harm (Connecticut, 2024).
It is disheartening to learn of incidents where those entrusted with the well-being of children fall short of their responsibilities. We stand firmly against actions that compromise the emotional and mental well-being of special needs students.
Fear of retaliation keeps students from speaking up, even in the face of life-threatening abuse.
Together, we can create a society where every child, regardless of their abilities, is treated with dignity and respect. We must actively work towards a future where no child faces harm, and every learning environment is a haven of acceptance.
